How to Feel Beautiful No Matter My Size
I'll start this blog by confessing that my insecurity has led me to have more male friends than female friends. I thought this would help me, but it's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I feel safe because I've never felt rivalry in friendships with men—yes, the rivalry we unwittingly create among ourselves in social circles. And on the other hand, I've seen how our female gender invents beauty standards that, surprisingly, men don't care about as much.
A while back, I asked 10 male friends to describe a beautiful woman to me, and, lo and behold! None of them mentioned implants, fake nails, eyelashes, or hair extensions. They also didn't mention thin or thick bodies. The beauty they described was completely removed from the beauty standards we know.
I'm not saying that it's wrong for girls to get cosmetic procedures or style their own hair. I just want to remind you not to get overwhelmed if you feel like you don't fit into the standards imposed by society. Because, apparently, even though I only asked 10 men, it's funny how they all agreed, right?
I'm writing this because, for a long time, my self-esteem was defined by my body. I've always been a plus-size woman, and I know what it's like to look in the mirror and wonder if you fit into society's beauty standards. I know what it's like to like certain clothes—blouses, jeans, skirts, plus-size lingerie, lace bodysuits, swimsuits—and not find your size.
